SIVAJI GANESAN  - LEGEND IN ACTING

As a rickshaw puller in Babu

In the film ‘Babu’ Sivaji lived the life of rickshaw puller’. He is protecting the family of Balaji after his sudden death for the simple reason that he was offered a square meal one day by him and his wife Sowcar Janakari. When the family was struggling for survival, Sivaji shields Sowcar and her daughter Vennira Adami Nirmala by acting as their bread-winner. He takes the pain of taking baby Sridevi to the school and brings her back. Whenever Sowcar calls him “Anna”, he replies sensitively, “etho babu vanduttenma, inda yuir ullavaraikkum ungala vittu pogamattema”. When Nirmala fell in love with Sivakumar, the affluent Major Sundar Rajan, after much hesitation decides to accept Nirmala as his daughter-in-law.  Keeping his status in mind, Sundar Rajan looks at Sivaji, the rickshaw as an untouchable. The character Babu shot back with his stylish look and mannerism by using his hand, but not it in words, to the deafening applause of the audience in the theatre. Sivaji also conveys his warmth and affection, laced with loyalty and emotion to Sridevi and later to Nirmala in the song: “ethoenthan theivam munnale, naan ore oru punnagaiyil kandene, paasamulla parvaiyile kadavul vazhgiran, karunai ullam konda nenjil kovil kolgiran”

As a CID officer in Raja

In ‘Raja’ Sivaji excelled, though it would have ideally suited MGR. A remake of Hindi film ‘Johnny Mera Naam’, Sivaji did the role of Dev Anand.  Though the scope for acting was not much for him in the film, whatever opportunities he got, he displayed it nonchalance. For instance, when the villain Manohar beats his mother with ‘chowku’, the hero Raja consoles his tear in a balanced manner, as the revelation would have exposed his job in the police.  Dev Anand said later that he could not perform that particular scene with distinction like Sivaji. In another scene, when Sivaji comes to know that Balaji is his brother after a bout in boxing, he shouts with immense joy: “ivvalvu naal engada poyirunde”.
