SIVAJI GANESAN  - LEGEND IN ACTING

               BY K.V. VENUGOPAL

As a loving brother and opposing social superstitions in  Parasakthi

When V.C. Ganesan became Sivaji Ganesan and started his dialogues with “success, success, success”, little did the tinsel world realize that he would enthrall the entire world with his breath-taking performance in his debut film ‘Parasakthi’. Can anyone forget the performance of the character ‘Kunasekara’, especially in a court-scene where Sivaji with his Dictaphone pronounciation in Tamil for near about ten minutes explains the judge that he was forced to eliminate the priest V.K. Ramasamy, as he was trying to rape his sister Kalyani:  “ en thankai kalyaniyai vazhavittarkalla, kovil kudathu endru solavillai, kovil sathikararikalin koodamaga marividakkadu endruthan choonen, odinen, odinen, vaikaiyen oratthukke odinen”. A large number of film-goers could not believe that Parasakthi was his first film, considering the manner in which he performed with absolute ease. Moreover, with his crisp voice, effortless body language, excellent timing and powerful eyes created a beautiful impact of the Chidambaram Jayaraman number ‘Ka, ka, ka’. The film ran for more than 100 days, mainly due to the amazing performance of Sivaji and when it was re-released in the then Chitra theatre after 16 years, that is in 1968, Parasakthi had touched near about 75 days. Sivaji was also under pressure to prove his mettle, as initially, the producer A.V.M. Chettiar was not pleased with his performance and was keen on completing the film with the then popular hero ‘K.R. Ramasamy’. Ultimately, P.A. Perummal and the former Chief Minister C.N. Annadurai’s counsel prevailed on him.

As a Womaniser in Thirumbipaar

In the film ‘Thirumbipaar’, Sivaji-Karunandi duo once again proved that they are a force-to-reckon with. Though, Narasimha Bharathi was the hero of the movie, it was Sivaji as a wrong-doer who stole the hearts of the film fans. His power-packed deliveries matched Karunanidhi’s powerful dialogues. The manner in which he displayed his emotion with tears to the dialogue of “nee sendru vantha pathaiyai thirumpipar, sellappogum pathayai ninaithupar, kamatthudan pengalai anuguvathai kanavilum ninaithup parkathe. Than vinai thannai sudam, oottappam veetai sudam.
