Portfolio essentials

Portfolios should “read” just like any other book. It should have a terrific beginning, a strong middle and a sensational ending. You should have people wanting to turn the pages with curiosity. Each photo should satisfy that curiosity. It should display your strengths to potential clients and show what you are capable of selling, be it clothes, cars or cosmetics.

The development of a portfolio can be very expensive, long and arduous process but well worth it. The types of photos you should shoot depend on what your strengths are. Some models will have a beautiful face and skin but not a fit body. Some models may have an excellent body structure but not a beautiful face. Not all will have the best of the best. So, identify your strengths and project that. Some experienced models will have different looks for different markets. If you have a great body, shoot a lot of body shots. If your legs are terrific, shoot a few leg shots. If you have excellent skin and hair shoot a lot of beauty shots. The idea is to advertise what you have to offer the clients, concentrating on your best features.

It is very important to be versatile. However, do not be so extreme and inconsistent that you confuse the client. Until you are experienced and really understand yourself you need to keep things straightforward – the makeup and hair , soft, lighting, simple, the clothes and mood, uncomplicated. Ideally the total number of photos could be five – one large and four relatively smaller ones (not too small) Please make sure that the photos complement each other. Do not have contrasting photos like a bikini on one side and fur coat next to it. Try also to include some photos with other models too as this would convey the message that you are comfortable working with other models/groups.

At the beginning of your career, try to include,

a. At least two head shots, with two different expressions – one smiling and one serious with one in the studio and one outdoors.

b. At least two fashion shots, one casual and one formal.

c. At least one full length shot showing the proportions of the body. You could wear a bathing suit or lingerie, depending on what you are comfortable with.
