 SIVAJI GANESAN-LEGEND IN ACTING

Mythological character of deaf and dumb, later blessed by Lordess Saraswathy who restores speech in Saraswathy Sabadam

In Saraswati Sabatham, when the character Vidyapati, who was deaf-and-dumb, becomes a well-known poet with the blessings of Goddess Saraswati(Savitiri), he takes the oath to sing only the songs of Kalaivani. K.R. Vijaya, a beggar, before becoming the princess with the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi, impressed with his ability, asks him to sing a song, praising her virtue. Valayapati(Sivaji) refuses to glorify her, stating that he is supposed to sing, adoring the virtues of Saraswati.  Sivaji also shuns aside Vijaya’s offer to become the ‘Asthana Vidhwan’ of the kingdom. Enraged over his refusal to flatter her, the Princess imprisons him. When Vijaya warns him with dire-consequences, Sivaji retorts, “kalaimagalai padiya entha vaai, veru yaraiyum padathu. Kalvikku nigaraka intha ulagathel ethuveme illai”. In spite of adhering to his principles, the Princess makes another attempt to make him sing. When Sivaji asks her rather with tinge of sarcasm: “eppadi padinalum paraviyilaya”, Vijaya nods her head. Then Valayapathi begins with the song “Rani Maha Rani, Rajjiyatthin rani, vega vegamaga vanda naagarika raani. Kalai magalai thirumagalthan vetri kandadundo” in the clear-cut voice of TMS. Sivaji did dual role in that film. As ‘Naradar’, he creates confusion and anger in the minds of Saraswati(Savitri), Lakshmi(Devika) and Parvathi (Padmini). When all the three forces him to decide who is the supremo by calling him “Narada enge va”, Nadigar Thilagam pauses at them, ponder aboutthe situation with his wonderful observation by rolling his eyes and replies with laughter: “enakku ondrum theriyathu, alai vidungal” and proceeds with the title song “Kalviya, Selvama, Veerama, Annaiya, Thandaya, Theivama, ondrilamal mattrondu uruvaguma, ethil uyarvendrum thazvendrum ethai kuruvar”, again none other than TMS in the background.

As a devoted army chief, amythological character in Kandan Karunai

In ‘Kandan Karunai’, the character Veerabagu’ became more prominent than the Lord Kandan role played by the hero Sivakumar. Sivaji polished that character in such a way that the film lovers even today identify the movie with the powerful dialogues of Veerabagu, and especially, when he warns ‘Soorabadman’(Ashokan) with dire consequences, if he exceeds his limit with “engal kandanudan modinal podi podiyakividuvai jaakirathai. Unnai ponra kodiyavanai veerodu agatrividuvan”. Veerabaghu also enjoys the conflict between Valli(K.R. Vijaya) and Devayanai(Jayalalithaa) and bursts into laughter when both the women claiming to be close to Kandan invite him in their duel with “nalla mattikittaya. ethuvum unvillayattuthano?”. Sivaji’s larger-than-image presence in the song ‘Vettri Vale, Veera Val”, has made the A.P. Nagarajan movie more popular and the movie became an instant hit like his earlier films Thiruvilaiyadhal and Saraswathi Sabadam.
