SIVAJI GANESAN  - LEGEND IN ACTING

As a rich man plagued by conscience in Aalayamani

The film ‘Alayamani’ posed a challenge to him. It was a complex role as an affluent industrialist is plagued by manasatchi(conscience). The story depicts that the hero pushes another boy into the river, who dies on the spot, during his childhood days without realizing the gravity of the situation. The conscience pricks the industrialist and he is trying to compensate it by doling out resources to the poor, downtrodden and toiling masses. Often he indulges in self-talking: “Babu ennai mannichudu” with tears not only emanating from Sivaji, but also from the audience. When P.S. Veerappa enters his house to rob his money, Sivaji throws lots of cash before him with “entha eduko, enuum edukko with his lion-like voice, Veerappa changes his mind and apologises to him  Sivaji’s friend S.S. Rajendran, realizes that Sivaji cannot tolerate defeat, he sacrifices the heroine Saroja Devi for him. When Sivaji grew suspicious over their relationship, albeit strengthened by Radha’s brain-washing, he ponders and asks” ethai muthallya solliyirukkalama. Naan enna avvaluvu evvu irakka mattravana”.  Sivaji reveals his inner feeling in a time-bound manner in the song “Ponnai virumbum bhoomiyile, ennai virumbum oruyire, pudhayala thedi, alayum ulagil, ethayam thedum enoyuri.” When Dilip Kumar did the Hindi version ‘Admi’, he was reluctant to accept the offer initially, as he later confessed that he was not confident of performing with ease the ‘manasatchi pesukirathu’(consciene speaking) scene like Sivaji. Only after much persuasion from the producer P.S. Veerappa, he accepted the offer. Dilip, a method actor, though did his best, but people who saw both the versions, had remarked without any hesitation that Sivaji scored over Dilip in the overall impact of the movie.

As a suspected womaniser by his lover in Iruvar Ullam

In ‘Iruvar Ullam’, the heroine Saroja Devi suspects him as a womanizer and leaves the residence. Sivaji repents for his behaviour and apologises with “Kannethire thondirinal, kanimugathai kattinal, nervazhiyil matrinal, netru varai ematrinal”. He shows his desperation, matching his emotion, with eyes twirling, while longing for her return: “ennavittu avaporathu nankaranama irundetene”.  The film was also made in Hindi by the Producer-Director L.V. Prasad, titled as “Sasural” with Rajendra Kumar and Saroja Devi in the lead.
