Make up Terminologies

Alkaline:

Anything with a pH higher than 7 is alkaline; a pH below 7 is acidic. Water has a pH of 7; skin has an average pH of 5.5. Skin irritation can be caused by products with a pH of 8 or higher. Also, research indicates that the bacterium that causes acne, Proprionibacterium acnes, proliferates when the skin is more alkaline. Alkaline is the opposite of acidic, In terms of your skin’s chemistry.  Your skin’s pH ( the level of alkalinity versus acidity) can affect or change the appearance of pigments in make-up. One’s goal should be to help keep skin’s pH balanced.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are nutrients or ingredients such as Vitamin E, Vitamin C and beta-carotene which are thought to protect body cells from the damaging (aging) effects of oxidation. They help keep skin looking younger.

Blush

Rouge (French red, also called blush ;blusher (UK), is a  cosmetic typically used by women to redden the cheeks so as to provide a more youthful appearance, and to emphasize the cheekbones. Historically, rouge was used as early as in ancient Egypt. It was also applied on the lips, the way  lipstick  would be used today. In some times and places, both men and women wore rouge, such as during the Regency period in England. In Britain's  Victorian Age, when wearing makeup was associated with low morals, ladies resorted to pinching their cheeks (and biting their lips) to make them appear red instead.

Various substances have been used as rouge. In ancient Greece for example, crushed  mulberries were favored, while red beet juice, crushedstrawberries  and  red amaranth have also variously been used.

In modern times, rouge generally consists of a red-colored talcum-based powder that is applied with a brush to the cheek. The coloring is usually either the substance of safflor (the petals of safflower), or a solution of carminein ammonium hydroxide and rosewater perfumed with rose oil. A cream-based variant of rouge is schnouda, a colorless mixture of Alloxan with cold cream, which also colors the skin red.

Brow Bone

Brow bone is the area of the eyelid directly below the arch of the brow.  It really is a bone and is more or less prominent, depending on the shape of you skull and eye socket.

Concealer

Concealer is a product that hides everything your foundation doesn’t. It is used to make broken capillaries, undere eye circles, age spots and skin discolorations disappear. Because its consistency is thicker than foundation, it gives great coverage.

Contour

Contouring is opposite of highlight. Contouring pushes the eye away from a feature and makes it appear less visible. A “contour shade” is usually a darker shade that gives your features more depth and definition by contrasting them against the lighter shades used on your face and around the eyes.

Discoloration

This describes the area of skin that has changed from its natural color. These can be dark circles, age spots, and any area of the skin that has changed from your natural skin tone usually becoming darker.

Exfoliate

This is the process of using products and actions that remove the dead surface layer of skin from an area of your body or face revealing fresh, younger looking skin.
